SS Ashbury Gun

This photo shows the Poppy board at the gun from the SS Ashbury which is situated in Talmine opposite the Post office overlooking Talmine Bay. There is a poppy for each of the 42 crew members who were lost in January 1945 when the ship was wrecked at the mouth of Talmine Bay. This was the worst loss of a merchant ship during WW11 which was not caused by enemy action.

The refurbishment of the gun and the creation of the poppy board has been a community council project. The inauguration of the gun from the SS Ashbury was held on 9th January 2025 to mark the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the ship. The Lord Lieutenant of Sutherland paid tribute to the local people who searched for survivors. Wreaths were laid by the Venerable John Green CB, by the local Coastguard team and on behalf of the community. The two-minute silence was followed by a lament played by a local piper.
